Microsoft is changing the name of Office 365

From 21 April 2020, Microsoft is rebranding its Office licenses for SMB and Enterprise customers. You will soon see that several of the Office licenses get new names.

Office 365 is changing its name to Microsoft 365. In the meantime, there is no change in price or content, even though they are changing names.

These are the new license names:

From now on, Office 365 Business and ProPlus will only be called  Microsoft 365 Apps, where you put “for business” or “for enterprise” behind to distinguish between what the various licenses are adapted to. Enterprise companies will have their Office licenses renamed from “Office 365 ProPlus” to the new license name “Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise.”

Not everyone will see the changes

The name change will appear for those with version 2004 and later. Older Office versions will not be updated for the new name for the time being. In any case, it will not be of any great importance to you as a user.

Although your Office user may not get a new license name, you should still be aware of the name change if you need information or help with your Office package.

To see which subscription and version you have, open an Office app, e.g. Word and press file > account.

Office 365 for Enterprise (E1, E3 and E5) and the Government and Education subscriptions will not change license names.

Easier to choose the right license

The fact that Office 365 licenses get new names can initially be experienced as somewhat confusing and unfamiliar. Still, the idea is that it will generally be easier to choose the right license in the future. By dropping the distinction between O365 and M365, it becomes clearer in which order the company should upgrade as it grows and needs change.

The fact that Microsoft is changing its name is also intended to make it clear that Office is much more than just Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The subscriptions also include apps such as Teams, Stream and Planner, cloud services, and artificial intelligence, to name a few.
